Customer Support > Personal Webspace Setup

< Go Back

If you have residential Internet service from Burlington Telecom we provide the account with 25 MB of webspace to set up a personal website.

Step 1  Contact BT at 540-0007 asking them to provision the space for the site. Your site's address will be:

www.burlingtontelecom.net/~username@burlingtontelecom.net

Your password will either be the one assigned to you by BT when you set up email, or if you changed it, the one you've choosen

Step 2  Once you've contacted us, design your website using HTML, a basic language understood by web browsers. With html, you can insert text, links and pictures. There are a number of tools that you can use for editing your HTML. For example: [all external links open in a new window]

You can even use Microsoft Word to create a simple HTML document. However, theres a great list of freeware or shareware at:  FreeCountry.com

Do you need advice designing your website... well, there are plenty of existing resources and guidelines to assist you with this. The one piece of advice we give is to think through the purpose of the site and how the user will navigate.

Step 3  Once you've designed your website, upload it to our servers so that you can share it with others. When you copy your files from your computer to our server, that is done with a FTP client. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. This is the tool you need to publish files from your PC to the web. There are several ftp clients available, and many HTML editors have ftp clients built-in. Consult your software documentation to learn more. In the meantime click here for a list of stand alone ftp clients.
